Education unions taking the lead

Teachers and education workers everywhere care about their students, and work hard every day to provide them with the best possible education. In this time of global economic crisis, children and families feel the impact first. That’s when the leadership role played by educators and schools in communities and across countries is so important. Representing 30 million employees in the education sector worldwide, through its 401 member organisations, Education International is asking governments of the world to:

  • Invest in education now. Education should form part of the solution to the crisis, bringing about a more sustainable and equitable future.
  • Avoid cuts in budgets for education. Leave education out of any budget cuts as their response to the global economic crisis. Do not make our children pay the price for the follies of bankers and investors.
  • Invest in public education now. Now is the time when education should form part of the solution to bring about a more sustainable and equitable future.
  • Continue to provide development aid for education in low-income countries to help them achieve the millenium goal of Education For All. Any reduction in the Official Development Assistance now will only undermine all the progress made so far.
What you can do:
  • Tell us how the crisis is affecting your country and what actions your education union are taking to protect education.
  • Find out more about how education is likely to be affected in your country.
  • Use the material that we produce to raise awareness in your union and among the public.
  • Take action to protect education and promote it as part of the solution to the crisis.
Hands up to protect education, protect our teachers and protect our children!
